Working as a construction site manager for ATZWANGER

Most projects are planned at ATZWANGER’s headquarters in Bozen/Bolzano. But then comes the on-site implementation phase and that is when the challenge begins for the site managers and their collaborators.

“No construction site is the same as another,” says Andrea D., speaking from experience. “Managing a site is never easy, but it’s always interesting and varied.” As a site supervisor, he is responsible for the entire on-site operation, coordinates the companies involved and is also the first point of contact for all subcontractors. “Ultimately, everything has to be built together.” This is why, for him, communication is just as important as technical expertise.

He spends most of his time on the road: a life in the field that he ‘chose deliberately’ and which he enjoys. For the past few months, he has been working in Turin, where a huge drinking water treatment plant with 14 filter tanks is being built. “They each have a diameter of 2.5 metres,” explains Roberto C., the engineer and project manager in charge. Around 600 m³/h of drinking water will be treated here. “To simplify and reduce the amount of work required on site for this installation, the pipes were prefabricated here at the ATZWANGER workshop and welded precisely in accordance with the plans. That's because working on a building site is particularly strenuous in summer,” he emphasises. “Also, welding indoors is better.”

So, from May until the end of July, the site manager coordinated the prefabrication of the pipes in Bozen/Bolzano and, of course, lent a hand himself. The numbers are impressive: a total of 22 tonnes of steel are processed, naturally with meticulous monitoring of the welding operations. Everything is then assembled on site; the complicated manoeuvring of numerous cranes is part of Andrea D.’s job.

He’s actually a qualified plumber. “But I hardly ever do that sort of work anymore,” he says with a smile. “In my 26 years at ATZWANGER, I’ve done and learnt a great deal. I used to be a welder, too. The best thing about my job as a site manager is the sense of satisfaction I feel when a plant is completed and working.”
